Discovering Your Child’s Destiny

Discovering Your Child's DestinyThe great Irish poet William Butler Yeats once said, “Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.” Isn’t that what we all aspire to in homeschooling our children—lighting “fires” in their minds and hearts?

But how can your homeschooling “light a fire” in your children’s hearts and minds if you don’t have a real grasp of who each child is, what makes them light up, what their strengths, weaknesses, interests and aversions are?

When asked how he could carve such beautiful sculptures, Michelangelo is said to have replied, “I see the angel in the marble and set it free.” That’s the real essence of homeschooling—seeing the potential and innate gifting in each of your children and providing them with the resources, tools, and opportunities to help them express all that God has put in them. The Unconventional Homeschooling Guide, DISCOVERING YOUR CHILD’S DESTINY, gives you the knowledge and tools to identify who each child really is, even when it seems like they are just “blocks of marble.”

The book guides you in the process of studying your children like Michelangelo studied the block of marble that eventually released an angel. Just as he examined the marble from every conceivable angle, we are going to look at our children from several different perspectives. In Chapter 3 we look at our children according to their temperaments and personality preferences. In Chapter 4, we open ourselves to the possibility that each of our children may have an extraordinary destiny in God. In Chapter 5, we look at spiritual giftings they may have been given. In Chapter 8 we consider them as works of art we co-create with God. In Chapters 9 through 11 we consider releasing our children from our own expectations and trusting what God has put in them and we visualize the future we want them to have. And finally, in Chapters 12 and 13, we find exercises to reinforce all we’ve learned and to help us “see” and “release” our angels from their marble.

Written by Ellyn Davis, a pioneer in the Christian homeschooling movement, this is the first book in a series of Unconventional Homeschooling Guides for Christian home educators. The book challenges you to survey your children like Michelangelo surveyed the blocks of marble that eventually become masterpieces of sculpture. In DISCOVERING YOUR CHILD’S DESTINY, each child is “known” in terms of his (or her) personality and temperament, his spiritual calling and gifts, his interests and desires. The book closes with a series of exercises parents can undertake to know their children better and recommends helpful resources.
